Paul F. Velleman 教授
Founder, Director of Research and Development
Data Description, Inc.

Paul Velleman, the original developer of Data Desk, teaches statistics at Cornell University in the Department of Social Statistics. He earned his A.B. degree magna cum laude in mathematics and social science from Dartmouth College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University.

He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, past Chair of the association's Section on Statistical Computing, past publications officer of the association's Section on Statistical Graphics, and has served two terms as Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, cited for his contributions to statistical computing, statistical graphics and data analysis.

Professor Velleman has published research in modern data analysis methods, graphical data analysis methods and statistical computing. His book (co-authored with David Hoaglin) Applications, Basics and Computing of Exploratory Data Analysis (Duxbury 1981), made computer implementations of exploratory data analysis methods widely available. The programs published with that book have been incorporated into many statistics programs including Minitab and P-Stat.

Professor Velleman is also the author of ActivStats, a multimedia presentation of the material in a standard introductory statistics course. ActivStats pioneers many new ways to teach the sometimes subtle concepts of statistics, probability, and data analysis.

Professor Velleman's recent research has focused on new graphical methods and innovative interface design for statistical computing in data analysis, and has been incorporated into the Data Desk program. His recent articles focus on the philosophy of data analysis, computer interface design, and the teaching of statistical computing and data analysis.
